William’s Summer Intern Experience

Fri, 18 Aug, 2023

William Reeves, a student at Oxford University, our CEO’s Alma Mater, joined us as a Summer intern, to learn about the world of FinTech whilst providing us with fresh insights too! As his internship draws to a close, he shares his experience with us.

What’s it been like joining IDR as a summer Intern?

Being a summer intern with IDR has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I received expert insights into the private markets investor journey through working with different teams across the company. The culture at IDR is so collaborative and friendly and I felt supported by the team at every step, whilst also being trusted with to learn and work independently.

What sort of projects have you been involved with?

I have been involved in a range of projects, including redesigning the logic and workflow for external emails to be integrated into the online hub, researching funds jurisdictions to investigate legislative changes to AML regulations, updating documents and videos to the new branding and preparing KYC profile packs for Managed Services clients. We also had the opportunity to complete a PRINCE2 Foundation project management course, providing a qualification I can use in my future career.

What’s been your main learning?

The biggest thing I learned was how the private equity sphere functions, and in turn, how IDR solves a key gap in the market. It was incredibly useful to be fully immersed in the company to gain the full picture of the lifecycle of an investor. Previously, I had some experience in venture capital, but here I saw the tangible consequences and inner workings of private equity.

What have you enjoyed the most?

I have enjoyed getting to know the IDR team, as it is such a supportive environment, and I appreciated getting to meet people virtually across the different locations. Moreover, I enjoyed the problem-solving projects and gaining an insight into how fintech companies operate.

What are you studying at university?

I am currently studying biochemistry at Oxford – I have just completed my third undergraduate year and in September will be undertaking a master’s project investigating cell division in yeast cells.

Outside of work, what have you enjoyed during your time here in Guernsey?

I have enjoyed exploring the Island, around the port and beach especially. The hills, sun, and amazingly bright blue skies reminded me of when I lived in California. I also got to experience the Island Games, which was a big highlight – particularly the opening ceremony and marathon events. And of course, having proper Guernsey milk!
