Robin Silverthorne and Roxane Fricou joined over 4,000 private markets fund managers and investors at SuperReturn in Berlin last week. Speakers from industry giants including KKR, Carlyle, Thoma Bravo and Apollo shared their thoughts on the direction of travel for the industry alongside fascinating insights from Abba’s Björn Ulvaeus and luminary of the football world, Arsène Wenger.
Their top three takeaways from the event were as follows:
1️⃣ The topic du jour was DPI and the challenges associated with lower capital distributions to investors following the glut of deals made early in the decade. Apollo’s Co-President Scott Kleinman captured the sentiment remarking “Everything is not going to be ok…. until the pig moves through the python”.
2️⃣ Secondary strategies were highlighted as increasingly significant in helping to generate much needed liquidity through providing managers with the tools to manage their portfolios in order to return capital to investors.
3️⃣ Looking ahead, KKR’s Co-Head of Global Private Equity, Peter Stavros pointed to the continued outperformance of the private markets driven by the ongoing ‘institutionalisation’ of the asset class. He noted that with this trend, the industry is going to have to find ways for retail investors to participate.
At IDR we’re excited to playing a part in creating a more streamlined and accessible private markets investor experience for institutions and individuals alike through connecting ~40,000 investors with ~5,600 funds and ~300 fund managers in one trusted hub.
